My Space – My Room with a View

There has been much written about the trendy ‘man cave’, a space for a male. I wanted my room to have a view, not a cave man closed mentality. I wanted to look outward, to have the ability to look at the sky, and the clouds, the sunrise and sunset, to positively interpret what the day promises to be, to create the day, to create everyday.

A Room of One’s Own by Wolfe was based on the conception that a woman must have money and a room of her own if she is to write and create in the arts. Her essay is noted for its argument for both a literal and figural space for women writers and artists within a literary and artistic tradition dominated by patriarchy. Women had been kept from careers, professions, vocations, occupations or calling in the arts because of their relative poverty and limited financial freedom. Even though Wolfe had been granted a yearly stipend it was not until she earned a substantial amount of money from her own writing did she give herself (or was given) permission to create a room of her own. The historical greats in the arts were male and they generally had their own space where they were allowed, or given permission, to think and do, to be and create. I have now given myself permission to create a space of my own.

A room of one’s own has continuously been a strong desire for artists or authors. I have always wanted a room of my own. A room to leave my tools at the ready, be it paints and brushes or scraps of papers, favorite pens and various drawing and writing implements within easy reach. A space to go to…to be uninterrupted. I know I am not unique in this wishful thinking.

After reading about other spaces and studios I developed a mental image and the physical design of what my perfect space should look and feel like; to create, to write, to read, to play music, and to meditate. The room needed to be conducive to enhance new possibilities to grow as an artist and writer, to plant seeds of creative and intellectual growth, and space to bring in things that would generate new inspiring creative energy.

It has a wall of south facing windows as well as windows to the east and west. I can watch the sun rise and the the sun set, and the clouds forming over the city and the high rise buildings in the valley.
